My Story: When Your Christian Marriage is Toxic

Years ago, trapped in a marriage marked by emotional and verbal abuse, I turned to every resource possible—from prayer and Christian marriage counseling to various programs aimed at saving marriages. Despite my efforts to stay and pray, my situation worsened, leading to spiritual stagnation, emotional depression, and even physical exhaustion and panic attacks. I had lost so much of myself. But God...

...in my darkest hour through a profound dream, God revealed that He did not approve of my marriage—a revolutionary moment that freed me from the jail that was my dysfunctional marriage, and guided me towards the true meaning of divorce under biblical grounds.

What it's like to walk through the valley of the shadow of death via divorce...

I thought understanding whether divorce was biblically right would be tough, but that was just the start. I always say to my students, divorce is only worth it if it becomes a first step toward freedom, a leap toward everything God has planned for you. That’s exactly what I embraced. I dove deeper into my relationship with God, not just studying the Bible, but learning to hear His voice clearly and consistently. This shift helped clarify His plans over my own mistaken choice in marriage partner—something I delve into in my Authorized Divorce course.

God laid out the next steps I should take to live out my purpose. I even created a vision board inspired by our conversations, which I talk about in my Finding Yourself While Seeking Your Purpose course, where I also discuss the power of vision boards in discovering your calling.

God is Faithful!

As I shared in the video above, embarking on a journey toward your God-given purpose and breaking free from an abusive marriage doesn't go unchallenged. The enemy doesn't just stand by; he tries to thwart your progress through well-meaning friends, family, and even church members who might encourage you to stay in the situation, alongside various life hardships aimed at making you give up.

I've lived this reality. Just as I started making strides with my vision board, I faced a grueling four-year custody battle, was maligned and even unjustly jailed for standing up for what was right. But through it all, God proved His faithfulness as a promise keeper, miracle worker, and King of Glory! Now, I'm walking in my purpose Freedom Through Divorce LLC, guiding other women of faith to step out of toxic marriages and walk into their freedom and purpose with God.

How did I endure and overcome such trials? Psalms 23:4-6 was my anchor: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Deepening my relationship with God was crucial. His presence was my comfort and my strength in a battle that was already won in the spiritual realm.
